John Denies Being the Christ

Scripture

John 1:19-28

Commentary

Because of the great things that John did and the following that he had, some thought that he was the long awaited Messiah.  John was always quick to tell everything that he was not the Christ however but that his job was to prepare the way for Him.

John understood what his ministry was about and that he was only a servant of Christ.  His job would be temporary and there would be a time to step aside and allow the Messiah to begin His ministry.  In the end John wouldn't have a choice as he is thrown into prison and then executed.
