Burial of Jesus

Matthew 27:57-61
Mark 15:42-47
Luke 23:50-56
John 19:38-42

Key Differences

Mark tells us that Joseph of Arimathea was a member of the Council.  This is the Jewish ruling council which is also known as the Sanhedrin.  Luke informs us that even though Joseph was a member of the Sanhedrin, he did not agree with putting Jesus to death.  John mentions that Joseph did not go alone but had Nicodemus accompany him.  Nicodemus was a secret follower of Jesus like Joseph.

Additional Commentary

Everyone was pressed for time as the Jewish Sabbath was quickly approaching.  Because they did not want anyone hanging on a cross on the Sabbath an order had been given to break the legs of the criminals hanging next to Jesus in order to speed their deaths.  Jesus had already given up His spirit when the soldiers came to Him however.

Ordinarily more would be done to prepare the body at burial but there was only enough time to wrap the body and place it in the tomb before sundown, the start of the Sabbath.  Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where Joseph and Nicodemus laid Jesus' body.  Their intention was to return Sunday morning to complete the burial.
